Is unemployment in the United States going up or down? Statistics published from the United States Department of Labor showed that in the week ending November 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 336,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 345,000. The 4-week moving average was 348,250, a decrease of 9,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 357,500.
States with a decrease of more than 1,000 were California at -4,460 and Virginia at -1,807. The state of California said that this was due to fewer layoffs in the retail, wholesale trade and service industries, while Virginia stated that their decrease was the result of few layoffs in the manufacturing industry.
